Sometimes You Just Need to Be There
Murray pounded on the door of Kairos. It was a Tuesday afternoon. No one was around.
Murray looked around at the city traffic, at the people strolling without a care on the footpaths. He ran his hand wildly through his hair, leaving it looking like a rat’s nest. He didn’t care.
He pulled in a breath and pounded on the door again. Surely somebody had to be there.
Stu opened the door cautiously. “It’s Tuesday, mate,” he said. “We’re not open today. If you need something, check with your food bank.”
Tears in his eyes, Murray brushed the suggestion aside. “I don’t need food,” he said. “I just need someone to talk to.”
Murray had just come from his doctor’s office. He had found some lumps. As Murray looked into the uncertainty of his future, he realised he didn’t have anyone to help share his burden.
Stu invited him into the storeroom. Over a coffee, Murray was able to talk through his concerns, fears and plans.
He just needed someone to talk to.
Community is the heart of Kairos.
The word “kairos” means an opportune moment. Sometimes that moment is providing food where it is needed. At another time, it might be sharing a coffee with someone who just needs to talk.
