Getting Back to Work

Life wasn’t working out so great for Liam. He had made some unfortunate choices, got mixed up with gangs, lost his driving license. By the time he wound up at Kairos, his prospects weren’t looking good. He had little training in anything that he could offer to a potential employer, and little motivation or confidence to change what his life had become.

But Liam did have one thing going for him. He liked to help out. Stuart befriended Liam. As the relationship strengthened, Stuart starting finding things for Liam to do. He asked Liam to help stack some firewood at his house. Eventually Liam started helping out in the store room at Kairos.

Things blossomed from there. Liam got his driver’s license back. Stuart helped Liam to enrol in a 10-week course with Ministry of Social Development to help train him for employment. Through that, Liam was able to find work driving trucks for a trucking company.

They say he’s one of the best employees they ever had.

“I’ve worked it out,” Liam announced to Stuart one morning. “I can do this!”

“What can you do?” Stuart asked. “What are you on about?”

“I’ve worked out that I can get up out of bed in the morning. I can come to work. I can do a day’s work and I can come home feeling good about myself.”

New beginnings. We love building relationships that help build purpose and using our networks to create opportunities. It’s what we live for at Kairos.
