It’s not a Competition

When Wonky Box first announced that they were going to start offering their service delivery of wonky-shaped produce to the South Island, my husband voiced some concern. “Is that going to affect what you’re doing at Kairos?” he asked.

I explained to my well-meaning partner that Wonky Box does amazing work, rescuing produce that would historically have gone to waste because it didn’t look a certain way, and redistributing it through produce subscriptions. Their vision is very much in line with our goals at Kairos. I explained that did not make them competitors, but team-mates.

Proving my point, within days of the Wonky Box announcement, Kairos was contacted by the team at Wonky Box.

“We just moved to the South Island, and we often have leftover produce after packing. Would you like to collect it?”

We didn’t have to think too hard.

It was the beginning of what is turning into a beautiful partnership between Wonky Box and Kairos Food Rescue. We are now enjoying an abundance of beautiful - if slightly artistic - fruit and vege that we can pass on to our food groups and to the folks at our Free Store.

This month Wonky Box is promoting an initiative to its subscribers who travel over the holidays, giving them the choice to donate their box over Easter to Kairos. The additional produce donated through this promotion will be sent on to our food groups for distribution in their communities to people in need.

Partnering with Kairos was a no brainer. Their commitment to waste reduction and making sure perfectly edible food finds its way to hungry Kiwis instead of landfill aligns perfectly with our Wonky Box ethos. We look forward to continuing our partnership for years to come!
